Optical Spectroscopy of the Somewhat Peculiar Type Iib Supernova 2001ig
نویسندگان
چکیده
Here we present previously unpublished optical spectra of supernova (SN) 2001ig, a Type IIb SN, from about a week after explosion until nearly one year later. The earliest spectrum consists of only a few broad absorption features, but soon more common Type II SN features including hydrogen P-Cygni profiles and helium absorption become apparent. At later times, as the H features fade and the He I absorption becomes more prominent, we observe the SN to transition from a Type II to a Type Ib. Finally, observations after 250 days past explosion show a nebular-phase SN spectrum with one of the largest magnesium to oxygen intensity ratios ever seen. Additionally, we present models of the late-time spectra which indicate that the inner ejecta consist of ∼1.15 M⊙ of material, most of which (by mass) is in the form of oxygen, with ∼0.13 M⊙ of Ni and essentially no hydrogen. Subject headings: supernovae: general — supernovae: individual (SN 2001ig, SN 1987K, SN 1993J, SN 2008D, SN 2002ap) — radiative transfer: supernovae

Bi-polar Supernova Explosions
We discuss the optical spectropolarimetry of several core-collapse supernovae, SN 1996cb (Type IIB), SN 1997X (Type Ic), and SN 1998S (Type IIn). The data show polarization evolution of several spectral features at levels from 0.5% to above 4%. The observed line polarization is intrinsic to the supernovae and not of interstellar origin. These data suggest that the the distribution of ejected ma...
متن کاملThe Evolution of the Peculiar Type Ia Supernova Sn 2005hk over 400 Days
UBV RI photometry and medium resolution optical spectroscopy of peculiar Type Ia supernova SN 2005hk are presented and analysed, covering the pre-maximum phase to around 400 days after explosion. The supernova is found to be underluminous compared to ”normal” Type Ia supernovae. The photometric and spectroscopic evolution of SN 2005hk is remarkably similar to the peculiar Type Ia event SN 2002c...
متن کاملLow frequency radio and X-ray properties of core-collapse supernovae
Radio and X-ray studies of young supernovae probe the interaction between the supernova shock waves and the surrounding medium and give clues to the nature and past of the progenitor star. Here we discuss the early emission from type Ic SN 2002ap and argue that repeated Compton boosting of optical photons by hot electrons presents the most natural explanation of the prompt X-ray emission. We de...
متن کاملThe He-rich stripped-envelope core-collapse supernova 2008ax
Extensive optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of the Type IIb supernova (SN IIb) 2008ax are presented, covering the first year after the explosion. The light curve is mostly similar in shape to that of the prototypical SN IIb 1993J, but shows a slightly faster decline rate at late phases and lacks the prominent narrow early-time peak of SN 1993J. From the bolometric light curve and eje...

We present medium resolution (λ/∆λ ≈ 2500) optical spectroscopy of SN 1999by in NGC 2841 made around its light maximum. The depth ratio of the two Si II features at 5800Å and 6150Å being R(SiII)≈ 0.63 at maximum indicates that this SN belongs to the peculiar, sub-luminous SNe Ia. Radial velocities inferred from the minimum of the 6150Å trough reveal a steeper decline of the velocity curve than ...
